Montgomery County
Blacksburg
Home of Virginia Tech, Virginia's largest university and
a national football powerhouse, Blacksburg is a thriving university
town that was named as the "most wired town in the United
States" by Reader's Digest. The vibrant downtown area maintains
its small town feel with an eclectic collection of boutiques,
restaurants and historic sites, while just a mile away high-tech
industry prospers in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research
Center (CRC). The CRC is the only university related research
park and is responsible for bringing many jobs to the area
and is currently being studied by other universities because
of its success. Blacksburg serves as the cultural center of
Montgomery County and boasts many artisans and cultural activities
enjoyed by all.
Christiansburg
Christiansburg is the fourth largest town in Virginia and
the county seat for Montgomery County and can rightly call
itself the Home of Heroes. It's residents and long term visitors
have included Davy Crockett, Booker T. Washington, Daniel
Boone, Lewis & Clark, George Washington, and many, many others.
The Town of Christiansburg plays a major role in the thriving
economic environment of the New River Valley being the home
of the NRV Mall and several shopping centers which include
many national chain retailers/restaurants. Christiansburg
also hosts a wide variety of locally owned businesses including
an old fashioned Drive-In, one of the few left in the country.
Christiansburg proudly boasts its history as the location
where Daniel Boone crossed the Continental Divide entering
the wilderness. The Chamber hosts the annual Wilderness Trail
Festival in Christiansburg as a tribute to Christiansburg
history and as a fun family outing.
Though Blacksburg and Christiansburg are separate municipalities
they are connected in many ways, both historically and physically,
the Huckleberry Trail is a unique biking/walking path connecting
the two towns allowing the residents and visitors to enjoy
everything they both have to offer. Where ever you are in
Montgomery County you can literally be within 10 minutes of
a bustling retail market area or in the solitude and beauty
of nature all around you. Outstanding government planning
and citizen participation continues to preserve our natural
beauty and grow our communities so that our needs are met.
Riner
Located in south central Montgomery County, Riner has historically
been a rural farming community, though that has changed in
the last several years. Now home to an 18-hole golf course
and new thriving neighborhoods, Riner has become a very desirable
location for families in the New River Valley. Riner is also
home to the National School Blue Ribbon Auburn Elementary
School, one of only 5 schools in the state to win that award.
Riner charm includes the Brush Creek Buffalo Farm and Restaurant,
featuring healthy buffalo products in an old country store
setting.
Shawsville/Elliston
In the Northeastern corner of the county, Shawsville and
Elliston are home to many historical sites, including the
Waldron Farm, an original dairy farm from the 1700s, as well
as the Pappas home, a 250 year old home in which George Washington
and Lewis & Clark were guests. Not only do Shawsville and
Ellison have a strong historical background, it is a prospering
manufacturing area with Rowe Furniture as the feature business
in the industrial park. Education continues to prosper in
the newly built high school.
